Hitchin History
Hitchin, city (1991 pop. 33,480), Hertfordshire, SE England. Hitchin was the site of a monastery in Offas time and appears in the Doomsday Book as a royal manor named Hiz. Corn and cattle are traded at a biweekly market.
Industries include building contracting, engineering, tanning, parchment making, medicinal distilling, and rose growing. Henry Bessemer, the inventor, and George Chapman were born in Hitchin, as was Bob Hope, and the late Queen Mother in nearby St Pauls Walden.
Hitchin was previously known as Hythyn and was renowned for brewing beer reputedly to be a favourite tipple of Queen Elizabeth the 1st
Now known for it's pituresque shopping and Lavander farms, Hitchin retains it quaint charms in a modern and changing world. Hosting Rhythms of The world, the Hitchin Festival and annual Beer festivals is typical of this socially active an inclusive enclave.
